Snow Is Already on the Roof: What Actually Matters
The design load is a limit, not a warning line
A roof built to a 30 psf design load does not start failing at 25 psf and it is not instantly unsafe at 31 psf - the figure is a structural engineering limit with margin built into it, the way a bridge's rated capacity is not the exact weight at which it collapses. What is actually useful is direction and trend: how close an estimate is to the design number, and whether more snow or a freeze-thaw cycle is still coming.
Signs worth acting on, not just watching
New cracks in interior drywall or ceiling texture, doors or windows that suddenly stick, a roof line that looks different than it did last week, or audible creaking under load are all worth a same-day call to a structural professional - these are signs of a roof under real stress, not routine winter noise. Snow depth alone, without any of these, is a reason to estimate the load and keep watching, not necessarily to act immediately.
What actually reduces load, safely
A roof rake used from the ground on single-story sections removes snow without anyone on the roof, which is where most snow-removal injuries happen. Flat and low-slope sections - porches, additions, garages - carry the ASCE 7 low-slope minimum discussed in the calculation guide and are usually the first place worth checking, since they are the parts of a building most likely to be under-built relative to the rest of the roof.
When the county number stops being enough
An older home, a home with known additions or a flat-roofed section, or a load estimate that is closing in on the county figure are all reasons to stop estimating and get an actual inspection.
